About Us

The purpose of In His Sign is to share Jesus with deaf people and their families, and to help others to do the same.

In His Sign, with God’s help, desires to take the message of Jesus Christ around the world.

Our goal is to help start and strengthen deaf people in their walk with Jesus.

History

In His Sign began working fulltime in 1975.We (Debbie Klahn and Vicki Drummond) have composed the team of In His Sign since that time. In the early days, we would assist a church in developing an interpreted program for deaf people. Some of the work was from the ground up; while others were times of strengthening already existing ministries. We also taught sign classes at Lincoln Christian College and St. Louis Christian College. Later, we taught at Lincoln again while attending Lincoln Christian Seminary.

In 1982 In His Sign began an on-site partnership with Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, IA. We continued working in the same building until August of 2009. While at Deaf Missions, we several different roles. We taught Bible classes at both the Iowa and Nebraska Schools for the Deaf, taught signs at Nebraska Christian College, taught and later were co-deans of Deaf Missions’ Extension Classes, and worked with the International ministry. In His Sign also helped with Deaf Ministries at several area churches.

For many years, one of the dreams of In His Sign was to travel to different parts of the world and work with Deaf people. God has allowed this dream to flourish. For the past several years, we have traveled to many countries, in partnership with Deaf Missions. Most of the time we spent one week to a month in these countries. In 1997, we spent 11 months in Kiev, Ukraine.

In the fall of 2009, In His Sign believed that God was calling us to relocate our headquarters to Gillespie, IL. We have not ended our relationship with Deaf Missions, but will no longer be on-site full time. We plan to work on mission trips together in the future, especially with the Extension Classes.

The biggest reason for this relocation was so that we would have a place to write our dissertations, and to focus on the international side of our ministry. In His Sign is also open to God’s leading in other areas of service.

Autobiographies

Vicki Lynn Drummond

I was born on January 14, 1951 to Hugh (Bud) and Lillian Drummond. I grew up an only child and graduated from Gillespie High School in 1969. I attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL for three years before transferring to Lincoln Christian College (now a part of Lincoln Christian University), and graduating in 1975.

I and my mom began attending First Christian Church, Gillespie, IL in the summer of 1954 and I was baptized in Christ in July 1961. I was involved in many activities at the church, including teaching in the Sunday School department. I was also very active at MacGomery Christian Service Camp (now nicknamed Camp Mac).

While at Lincoln, I became friends with Debbie. I also became friends with Terry Dowling, a deaf man working on campus and soon I was actively involved with the work Terry was doing at Catlin Christian Church in Catlin, IL.

In 1973 I was part of the team conducting a Revival for deaf people in Loveland, OH (near Cincinnati). It was on this team that the name "In His Sign" was used for the first time. In 1974 Debbie and I, encouraged by others, approached First Christian Church in Gillespie, IL to become their living link sending church. Thus, In His Sign began full time on January 1, 1975.

I returned to Lincoln in 1990 to work on my Master of Arts in World Missions from Lincoln Christian Seminary. I graduated in 1995.

Currently, I am working on my Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies at Trinity Bible College and Theological Seminary, Newburgh, IN. I hopes to begin my dissertation in 2010.

I love to collect hats from around the world, Olympic memorabilia (especially hat pins) and pins from places I have been. I also enjoy exploring eBay and playing Solitaire. I love to do needle point, travel, cookout, and spend time with friends. My favorite color is purple. I also love serving God and sharing His Good News with others, especially deaf people and their families, around the world.

Though growing up as an only child, I have been “adopted” by Debbie’s family as a third sister. Debbie’s nieces and nephews call me “Aunt,” and some people have remarked how much I look like Dewey (Debbie's brother)!

Debra (Debbie or Deb) Sue Klahn

I was born to Bill and Ida Klahn on June 19, 1952, and am the second of three children. My older brother Dewey (married to Ellen) lives in Mt. Juliet, TN and my younger sister Diane (Klemm) is married to Dave. Dewey and Ellen have six grown children and six grandchildren, while Diane and Dave have a daughter Janelle who is a senior in high school.

I graduated from Merrillville High School in Merrillville, IN in 1970. I then attended Lincoln Christian College (now a part of Lincoln Christian University) from 1970, graduating in 1974.

I was blessed to be born into a Christian family and attended Merrillville Church of Christ since infancy. I was baptized in December 1959 and was very active in the ministries in the church - teaching both Sunday School and Jr. Worship. I also attended Lake Reign Christian Assembly, then located in Cedar Lake, IN as both camper and faculty.

One of the first people I met on Lincoln’s campus was Terry Dowling, a deaf employee of the college. Terry became my friend and began to teach me Signed English. I worked with Terry from the very beginning with the Deaf Ministry at Catlin Christian Church in Catlin, IL. I also interpreted for Terry in the college chapel and in the classrooms. As my friendship with Vicki grew, Vicki joined in, helping in these three areas of service.

In 1973 I was part of the team conducting a revival for deaf people in Loveland, OH (near Cincinnati). It was on this team that the name In His Sign was used for the first time.

I returned to Lincoln in 1990 to work on her Master of Arts in World Missions from Lincoln Christian Seminary, and graduated in 1995.

Currently, I am working on my Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies at Trinity Bible College and Theological Seminary, Newburgh, IN. I hope to begin my dissertation in 2010.

I love to read, especially mysteries and Christian Fiction. I also like to watch old television programs (especially detective and westerns). I like to keep in touch with family and friends and I have a collection of stuffed sheep/lambs. I love to travel, teach, do needle point, and spend time with my family. My favorite color is yellow, though I loves all bright, bold colors. I love to spend time sharing about Jesus and His love for all people. I especially love sharing the Gospel with deaf people and their families around the world.
